Logicalis Installs First Class Network And Facilities Management Provisioning At University College Falmouth
Centrepiece of New Campus Opens its Doors to Students
Slough, 1 November 2007: The latest state of the art academic building to form part of the new £70million Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) campus at Tremough, Cornwall is admitting its first students, following the installation of a state-of-the-art network and provisioning for a self-service facilities management system by international ICT solution provider, Logicalis.
The new building which will house the Falmouth Media Centre and Photography Centre will afford students access to the latest broadcast and media technology by running IP-based radio and television broadcasting facilities across the Logicalis network. The building also houses the University of Exeter Law and Geography courses whose students will benefit from the high-speed access to the campus network.
In total, the deal includes the extension of the network within the new building and an upgrade to the Cisco IP telephony system to enable IP facilities management services including: light and heating control; building access; CCTV; lift operations and fire alarms all of which will be secured through new Cisco firewalls and boundary protection.
An upgrade of the current network used across the existing campus buildings, which accommodate staff and students from both University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter, has also been completed to ensure a consistent level of teaching and service provision across the universities.
Nathan Prisk, head of IT at Tremough Campus Services, said, “Our difference lies in the cutting-edge technology our students and staff have at their fingertips. Logicalis has helped us enhance this differentiation by providing a cutting edge network and bespoke software, which will improve the student experience on campus and reduce the day-to-day costs of managing the on site facilities.”
“Installing such a critical product in such a tight timeframe meant we needed to get it right. We trusted Logicalis to make the right decisions and get the job done. Their holistic approach to the project – considering the longer term business benefits that could be delivered from the network, rather than simply installing it well - has been a learning experience for us, and we are already considering a second project with the team focussed on data management.”
Intelligent management of facilities at the Tremough campus where the new building is based will be centred around Intelligent Building Networks – which will run the heating & cooling of the building, CCTV and the automated doors.
Tom Kelly, managing director of Logicalis UK added, “Students see technology as a right - not a privilege. Logicalis has a heritage of working with educational establishments to ensure networks and data are managed as efficiently as possible, so that both staff and students experience the best of university life. Delivering the optimum IT environment for students to learn effectively and for staff to work efficiently is at the heart of this project, and we are looking forward to building on this over the course of the coming academic year.”
University College Falmouth, University of Exeter, Cornwall Campus will run geography, photography and media degree courses from the campus which has been part funded by the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative (CUC).
This is a unique partnership between Cornwall's Higher and Further Education providers aimed at increasing opportunities for study, research and economic development in the County. It uses funding from: The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Objective One programme; the South West Regional Development Agency; the Higher Education Funding Council England plus sums from charities and the CUC partners.
